Competency based Interview Questions

Every job can be described in terms of Key competencies. This means that it can be used as a measure for assessments, appraisals, training needs and eventually selection. Competencies are behaviours necessary to meet with the objectives of the organisation.

There are different types of competencies employers are looking for:
Managerial Competencies: Leadership qualities – are you able to lead a group of people and take charge. Strategic planning and management control, Project Management, Influence, Conflict Management and Ethics and Corporate sensitivity.
Individual Competencies: Personal Skills and attributes, independence, flexibility and integrity.
Analytical Competencies: Attention to detail, Problem solving and Decision making.
Interpersonal Competencies: Communication, interacting with other people, teamwork, Personal adaptability, influence and the ability to persuade others.
Motivational Competencies: What are your drivers? What are your Personal and Career Objectives? What is your level of motivation and your drive to achieve?
To prepare for this type of an interview one must read the job description very carefully and identify the skills and competencies likely to be assessed. Adopting the star model will provide you with more structure to your answers. Always remember that a good competency focussed and well structured answers will win you the interview.
Below are some of the Competency based questions you could be asked.
1. Communication skills
Ø   What do you think are the 3 important things about Communication?
Ø   Tell me about a time when you had to convey some negative news to another person.
Ø   Tell me about a time when you had to work with people from a different culture to your own. How did you overcome any barriers to communication?
2. Problem Solving skills and Decision making
Ø   Tell me about a time when you were faced with a problem. What were the circumstances? How did you handle it and what decision did you take at the time?
Ø   What kind of problems do you handle best?
3. Interpersonal and Teamwork skills
Ø   What sills and personal qualities have you contributed to the teams you have been a part of?
Ø   Tell me about a time when you had a disagreement with a colleague and how did you handle the situation using diplomacy and tact?
4. Personal and Career Objectives
Ø   What are you short and long term goals?
Ø   What do you see yourself doing 5 years from now?
Ø   Why do you want this position or why do you want to work with us?
5. Conflict Management
Ø   How would you resolve conflict in the teams or groups that you are a member of?
Ø   What would you do If your colleagues were complaining to you about the organisation and other colleagues?
Ø   Give me an example of how you dealt with a difficult customer?
6. Experience, Competence and Ability
Ø   Tell us about a time when you had to do more that you could complete in time? tell us how you did it and what was the outcome?
Ø   What relevant work experience have you had?
Ø   What kind of technical equipment have you used in your last job?
