Behavioral Questions In Interviews

The philosophy behind behavioural interviewing is very simple and straight forward. Your past behaviour predicts your future behaviour. So if your employer wants to get an idea of how you would respond to a future situation in the company, he or she can get a good indication of how you have responded in the past to similar situations

Employers want to have evidence to back up possible exaggerated claims. Behavioural questions involve a lot of no-nonsense “ show me “ questions. Very often you will find yourself being asked questions like Give me an example of a case when you had to ……” or tell me of a time when …….

If you have mentioned that you have good  “Leadership Skills “ you will most likely be asked the question that sounds like “Give me an example of the time when your Team made your project succeed?” You will then have to come up with a good story to back up you claim. This would be easier if you have run through these questions at your preparation stage and gone through scenarios for your answer.

So how do you get ready for Behavioural questions?

Behavioural questions can catch you off guard if you have not prepared for them but if you are then it provides you with a platform to show off your accomplishments and the prospective employer can then see you as an asset for the company’s future.

1. Think about all the stories and scenarios in relation to your various skills you think the interviewer will be looking for .

2. Practice how you will deliver these stories. For each of these stories you must cover the following:

a. The Situation

b. The Task or job you had to perform

b. The Action you took in response to the situation.

c. The Results of your action.

Use STAR to remind yourself of how to answer a Behavioural question.

Here are 10 Types of behavioural questions that are generally asked:

1. When have you been most satisfied with your job?

2. What was the most difficult assignment you have completed using your computer skills?

3. Give me an example of when you have done more than you job required?

4. Tell me about a time when you had a confrontation with a co-worker or a boss?

5. Tell me about a time when you had to sacrifice quality in order to meet a deadline?

6. Give me an example of a time when you had to make a split second decision.

7. Tell me about a time when you had too many things to do and you were required to prioritize your tasks.

8. Give me an example of a time when you had to make a split second decision.

9. Tell me about a time when you had too many things to do and you were required to prioritize your tasks.

10. Give me an example of a time when you motivated others
